Scoopon goes Android as smartphone use skyrockets

Fans of Scoopon’s daily deals can now access them on the Google Android platform, thanks to the release of its new smartphone app.

The Scoopon Android app is already number one in the Android Market’s lifestyle section, and delivers daily deals to users at 12 noon every day.

Scoopon General Manager Jon Beros said the huge growth in Android smartphones meant the company’s decision to develop an app was a “no brainer.” To date, the app has been downloaded 8,500 times.

“500,000 smartphones are sold in Australia every month. As an online retailer we’re excited to be giving everyone on Android a native app. We’re also pleased by the fact that most people who’ve reviewed the app have given it 5 out of 5 stars.”

In taking the number one spot, Scoopon has pushed out other popular apps including the Yellow and White Pages, TelstraOne, Domain and RealEstate.com.au.

Scoopon released an iPhone app earlier this year, which has seen downloads growth of up to 486 percent per week and currently has 375,000 active users.

According to Beros, Scoopon has noted large spikes in mobile app use when Australian’s are on holiday, with the iPhone app responsible for 20 percent of total sales during the Easter break.

“Our Android customers hate missing a deal as much as everyone else. Now they don’t have to.”
