Happy with your career? Well, 2.2 million working Australians aren’t. In fact, more than half of Australian workers fell into their career path and 64 percent are keeping an eye out for new career opportunities, according to a survey commissioned by Chandler Macleod’s CMyPeople, an online competency assessment system.

“Not only does Australia have an escalating skills shortage, we currently have millions of people who are working in jobs they are not suited to and, as a result, are either actively or passively looking for other career opportunities without knowing what they really want,” says Kevin Chandler, executive director of Chandler Macleod.

“Unfortunately, for most people, finding a job or career is a chaotic process and it seems the majority of Australians choose a career path based on flimsy criteria at best,” adds Chandler. “No science is applied and more often than not, people’s career paths are left to chance. A disturbing number of people report that they just ‘fell into’ their careers.”

On the other hand, of the 25 percent of Australians who actively plan their careers, more than 80 percent are satisfied with the result.
