Telstra launches device-as-a-service offering

Telstra has launched mobile leasing plans to help SMBs stay up to date with the latest mobile technology.

The My Business Mobile Lease plans allow businesses to lease their mobile phones and upgrade to the latest devices for a flat fee after 12 months. All devices returned as part of the plans will be refurbished and reused.

“Just like cars, computers or office furniture, leasing business tools like your mobile phones makes sense,” said Telstra Business Executive Director, Brendan Donohoe.

“We know that business owners and their employees want to upgrade their devices on an annual basis as new technology becomes available. Having a more mobile workforce with access to all the right apps, systems and tools can improve efficiency, open up business opportunities, encourage better collaboration and provide staff with more flexibility to balance work and home life.”

Donohoe told Dynamic Business that the plans provide businesses with an easy and more affordable option to help keep staff connected with the latest mobile technology:

“Depending on the handsets and lease plan combination customers choose, customers could pay up to $10 less per month compared to our standard post-paid mobile plan and handset combinations,” he said.

“Customers will be able to upgrade their mobile phones after 12 months – even if the screen is cracked – for a flat fee, provided they return their device and recontract on a new 24-month handset and service plan.

Asked whether businesses are moving towards a devices-as-a-service model, just as there has been a move to software-as-a-service, Donohoe said emerging trends suggested this was the case: “American mobile carriers Sprint and T-Mobile have both launched leasing plans within the last two years, with more than a third of their customer bases choosing to lease, rather than own mobile devices.”
