iPhone 4S to break sales records

Analysts believe that close to 4 million iPhone 4S devices were sold around the world over the weekend, predicting the new smartphone broke the existing record for the number of Apple phones sold in a first weekend.

The iPhone 4S went on sale in the Australia, the US, the UK, Canada, France, Germany and Japan on Friday, with Bloomberg reporting Yankee Group analyst Carl Howe predicted sales would reach 4 million in the first weekend.

Sales of its predecessor, the iPhone 4, reached 1.7 million units in its first weekend on the market.

Apple reported last week that iPhone 4S pre-orders had topped 1 million in just 24 hours, surpassing the previous single day pre-order record of 600,000 held by iPhone 4.

Apple fans around the world queued up on Friday to get their hands on the device, which is the last to be developed by the late Steve Jobs. Jobs passed away just days after Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed the iPhone 4S to the world, after battling pancreatic cancer for close to eight years.
