Time to show isolation in business the door

Proving how real the threat of isolation is for small business owners, last week’s post about isolation has seen considerable discussion with many fellow small business owners admitting to feeling alone in their business.

There is absolutely no denying that when you are a small business owner you can start to feel cut off from the rest of the world, especially if you are a sole operator.

Here are some more ways that you can avoid isolation as a business owner:

  • Networking

Networking can be a useful tool if you make sure that the people you mix with are business people who are serious about growth, not just dreamers. Ensure it is a two way street and don’t approach the relationship with a “take mentality”. It will be a short relationship if you do.

  • Study

Stay on top of your game and meet new people at the same time by continuing to learn. This could be a 1-2 day course during work hours or it could be formal part-time study.

Whichever type of study suits your lifestyle and budget, the point is to meet likeminded people who can challenge and encourage you. You may even make some lifelong friends and business connections.

  • Get out and circulate.

Attend trade shows, business conferences, chamber of commerce events, and industry events. Not only do they provide great networking opportunities, but these events can also increase your visibility in the business community and create awareness of your product and service.

You’ll also learn about trends in your industry and meet other businesspeople.

  • Be very careful who you spend your time with.

There is never any shortage of people who have a negative attitude towards business and life in general. Treat these people as a direct threat to your business success and motivation.

A wise person once said, “Economists have predicted 26 of the last five recessions”.

Mix with people who will inspire you and offer practical solutions to your business challenges. Spend time with people who have the score on the board.

And most importantly – you buy the lunch or pay for the coffee. It will do you the world of good.

If any of you are looking for ways to connect with other small business owners, make sure you leave a comment (in the comments section below) and someone else can give you suggestions.
