American Express, in partnership with the International Downtown Association Foundation and Restaurant & Catering Australia, has announced the return of its Backing International Small Restaurants grant program.
The program aims to provide support to small independent restaurants that hold community significance, particularly during the challenges posed by the current economic climate. Priority will be given to restaurants operated by underrepresented and economically vulnerable individuals.
As part of the program, six Sydney-based restaurants will each receive a grant of $21,000 to invest in the sustainable growth of their businesses. All small independent restaurants in Sydney, especially those that serve as anchors within their local communities and are experiencing hardship, are encouraged to apply.
David Downey, Executive Director of the IDA Foundation, emphasised their commitment to supporting small independent restaurants and assisting them in thriving amidst ongoing economic challenges. He expressed gratitude for American Express’ generous support in implementing this innovative initiative.
Suresh Manickam, CEO of Restaurant & Catering Australia, highlighted the much-needed relief the grant program would provide to restaurant businesses across Sydney.
He expressed pride in supporting a program that contributes to the ongoing prosperity of these businesses and recognises their significant contribution to Sydney’s vibrancy and appeal.
This marks the second consecutive year that Backing International Small Restaurants has been implemented in Sydney, with the first year focusing on the historic Rocks area. The program spans five major cities: Mexico City, London, Tokyo, and Toronto. American Express has granted funds to over 100 restaurants worldwide through this program and its U.S.-based Backing Historic Small Restaurants program.
Backing International Small Restaurants reinforces American Express’ commitment to supporting small businesses throughout the year. This effort aligns with their annual Shop Small campaign, which shines a spotlight on small businesses and their global programs like American Express Delicious Month Out and other “Backing Small” initiatives.
